Swedish Truck Makers Suffer Production Woes

Sweden's truck makers, which shed workers and curbed capacity during the economic downturn as sales dwindled, are encountering problems as they ramp up production now that demand has returned.
Volvo AB, the world's second-biggest truck maker by sales behind Germany's Daimler AG, said Friday that it had suffered "temporary production disturbances" in the fourth quarter of 2010 when it had "raised its manufacturing pace to a higher level." That came just two days after rival Scania AB disclosed problems of its own.
Demand for trucks has rebounded as quickly as it went into reverse. Volvo, which sells trucks under the Mack, Renault and UD Trucks brands as well as its own name, said its sales in 2010 jumped 28% to 48,041 vehicles from 37,678 in 2009. Order intake rocketed 63% to 62,051 vehicles from 38,166 and demand continues to climb, largely driven by the need to replace the aging population of heavy-duty trucks.
Markets in northern and central Europe—Scandinavia and Germany, in particular—have fuelled demand for Volvo's trucks. The market for heavy-duty trucks in Europe, where Volvo generates more than 40% of its sales, last year rose 8% to 179,000 vehicles, a figure that it expected to accelerate to 220,000 in 2011.
The North American market jumped 20% in 2010 to 142,000 vehicles and Volvo expects it to roar ahead to 220,000 this year. While the rebound is good news for Volvo and Scania, both have stuttered as they geared up to fill orders.
"There's no such thing as an ideal ramp-up," said Volvo Chief Executive Leif Johansson.
Volvo's problems are twofold: training new staff and supplier bottlenecks. The Gothenburg-based company, which let go 18,000 temporary and part-time workers and consultants from mid-2008, hired 2,000 workers in the fourth quarter of 2010, and each needed a couple of weeks' training before they could join in production. The company's permanent work force at the end of 2010 edged up to 90,409 from 89,178 a year earlier, but the number of temporary staff more than doubled to 14,851 from 7,104.
Temporary workers allow companies the flexibility to adjust production up or down to meet demand without the social welfare obligations that come with permanent hires.
Volvo's suppliers face challenges of their own. "Our suppliers are on the same journey as us. They are also forced to increase volumes at an extremely quick rate," Mr. Johansson said, adding that he believed Volvo would run into the same sort of production problems in the coming two quarters.
It was nearly impossible to forecast the kind of supplier problems Volvo would run into, Mr. Johansson said. "If we knew what kind of problems we'd meet, we'd do something about it," he said.
He added that supplier problems differed vastly—if a turbo supplier couldn't deliver, that impacted the entire production chain. "But if we're talking about a lack of rear-view mirrors, we can attach those afterwards and that has a very limited effect," he said.
Scania Chief Executive Leif Ostling on Wednesday indicated similar issues, warning of "continued risk of bottlenecks among both sub-contractors and bodybuilding companies." Scania let go 2,000 temporary workers during the downturn and implemented four-day weeks as demand eroded. However, its workforce had increased to 35,500 at the end of 2010 from 32,000 a year earlier.

Rumormill: Next Bugatti Veyron to hit 270 mph

Bugatti is reportedly beginning work on the next generation Veyron, and rumor has it that they're looking to hit Ludicrous Speed. Okay, maybe it won't go quite that fast, but with a target of 270 miles per hour, it figures to be pretty darn close.

According to AutoExpress, despite losing money on each one it builds, Volkswagen Group has no plans to watch its mighty hypercar fade away, and the next version will stick to the business of shattering perceptions of what a production car can do. Reportedly, the 8.0-liter W16 engine and its quad-turbo setup will return in a similar form as is employed in the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport. However, the new car will head to the scales and produce a number far below what we see in current Veyron models. It will achieve this through more extensive use of lightweight alloys and carbon-composite materials.

If AE is reading its tea leaves correctly, the new warp-speed Bugatti Veyron to make an appearance sometime in 2013.

Tata working on 40kmpl diesel Nano?

The dream child of Ratan Tata, envisioned to shift masses away from bikes and upgrade to cars, hasn’t yet ‘clicked’ the way all of us expected. People are still buying bikes and they are buying them in plenty.
Obviously, the Tatas aren’t giving up so early. They are planning to complete with the two-wheelers on a critical factor that influences an Indian consumer the most, whether it is 4-wheeler, two-wheeler or one-wheeler – Mileage!
A report from IndianCarsBikes suggests that the Nano Diesel is expected to deliver 40kmpl. For our international audience that’s 94 mpg! ICB adds that the Nano will not have a CRDI engine but will instead rely on the Tata ACE’s IDI engine.
Tata Nano diesel
We are not very sure of this ICB report as all along we have been hearing of a 2-cylinder CRDI engine being developed for the Nano. The company has also confirmed this development recently, giving ICB another credibility point.
Tata Motors to NDTV Profit in September 2010 -
We are developing a two-cylinder diesel engine for the Tata Nano. We will give ourselves the time that is required to develop and refine the engine to our satisfaction. It is premature to speak on the details.
The ACE is powered by 4-stroke, 2-cylinder, 700 cc engine which is only BS III compliant. The engine block is the Indica’s engine cut in half.
Clearly, this engine will be tweaked to make it BS IV complaint as Tata doesn’t want to miss out the congested areas in India where bike riding is a harrowing experience. As a result, we really cannot comment on the performance of the Nano diesel.
But 40 kmpl is something unbelievably fantastic.
This sort of mileage could certainly match up against a few bikes that are currently sold in India. Plus, because it’s a diesel, which right cost 40 rupees per liter, the cost of running a Nano would be below 1 rupee per kilometer.

Leaked – 2012 Mercedes M-Class; SKD planned this year

Financial Express reported last week that Mercedes Benz has expressed interest in assembling the new M-Class and GL-Class in India. Mercedes Benz is encouraged by the response both these products evoked in 2010. They clocked 523 units in this segment (2009 = 140units) which is a titanic 273% growth.
The GL and M-Class are brought to India presently through the CBU channel. The SKD operation (Semi-Knock Down) will be adopted for these two utility vehicles in 2011.

2012 Mercedes Benz M-Class leaked image
While the GL Class is expected to continue its life in the current form, the new M-Class is awaiting its debut at one of the motor shows in 2011. The new model is expected to change in all fronts and will take the fight to Audi Q5 and the BMW X5 with fresh exteriors, reworked mechanicals and new interiors.
The M’s current wheelbase will be maintained while the overhangs will be trimmed. Mercedes Benz noted the replacement model will focus on efficiency instead of outright performance, which will be its performance division AMG’s task.
To achieve a tree-hugging result on a vehicle resembling a hippopotamus, Mercedes Benz is working on a hybrid powertrain for the ML which will debut as the ML450 Hybrid.
For the European market, a 204hp 2.2-liter 4-cylinder petrol motor is going to be available on the lower trims, while the larger V6 gasoline unit will sit under the hood of the top-end model.
We have to wait and see if the locally assembled M-Class will drive up volumes for the company. A lot will depend on the engines and level of equipment.

Mercedes Benz Maybach In India

German car manufacturer Mercedes-Benz is contemplating on relaunch of its Maybach for the Indian market. The move comes in the wake of rising demand for the super rich cars in the market. Mercedes Benz Maybach is capable of running at 275km/hr speed and Mercedes may fix the price of this car as Rs51 million in India. The company’s Chief Executive said the Indian luxury car has such a dearth for supercars as the cost may be on par private jets.

The analysis of the last year’s economy by Forbes revealed that there have been 17 new billionaires in the Indian population adding to the already existing to make it 69. As a partner of Daimler AG, Mercedes has sold 200 Maybach in the world market under two models – Maybach 57 S and 62. In the Chinese car market Mercedes has been selling 20 units of this Maybach but as of now there is no fixed target for India.

The executive said since its launch in 2004 Maybach has been moving at its own speed and for the Indian car market it is too early. But the company intends for a second push, he added. In the event of the launch of this Mercedes Benz Maybach in India, Mercedes would face VWAG’s Bentley and BMW’s Rolls Royce in this sector. This strategy is to migrate to newer markets as the developed markets have come to soft pedalingMercedes Benz Maybach

Mercedes plans to launch compact couple and SUV in U.s

Mercedes-Benz will launch coupe and SUV versions of its new compact car family in the United States in the next three years and is considering a third variant - a convertible or a shooting brake - to help win younger customers to the brand.

Joachim Schmidt, Mercedes' global sales and marketing boss, said in an interview with Automotive News Europe that the automaker is developing at least four models based on its new MFA, or Mercedes Front-wheel-drive Architecture.

“We will introduce the next generation of our MFA family to the U.S.,” Schmidt said. Two variants, maybe even a third, are planned for the U.S., he said.

The coupe will be launched in the U.S. in summer 2013, according to a company source.

Mercedes insiders call it a "baby CLS" because it will have similar styling to the brand's larger CLS coupe-styled four-door model. An SUV aimed as a rival to the BMW X1 will follow in summer 2014. Both variants will go on sale in Europe three to five months ahead of their U.S. launch.

Mercedes will introduce compact cars in the U.S. because consumer preferences are changing toward smaller vehicles. The automaker also wants to stay apace with rivals BMW and Audi. The new compact car family will replace Mercedes' current A- and B-class models, which are not sold in the U.S. In Europe, Mercedes will launch the next-generation B class hatchback at the end of this year, followed by the A class hatchback in late summer 2012.

Mercedes has no plans to sell first those two MFA variants in the U.S. but could do so if it sees a demand. The source said: "The U.S. is not the typical compact hatchback market but if the demand arises, we could react very quickly and introduce these two variants in the U.S. far quicker than in the past."

GM Increasing Jobs, Production to Meet Demand for Heavy Duty Pickup Trucks

GM Increasing Jobs, Production to Meet Demand for Heavy Duty Pickup Trucks
General Motors plans to add a third shift at its heavy-duty truck plant in Flint, Mich., to meet increased demand for Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra 2500 and 3500 HD pickups, according to an announcement by the company this morning.
The additional shift is expected to create 750 jobs. Flint Assembly currently employs nearly 2,100 workers operating two production shifts.
In 2010, the plant produced 115,000 trucks, most of them regular and crew-cab versions of the heavy-duty Silverado and Sierra. Last year, the plant added production of regular and crew-cab versions of the light-duty Silverado.
"Adding a third shift is a response to customer demand for heavy-duty pickups, which most people use to tow, haul and plow,” said Mark Reuss, president of GM North America. “Equally important, it brings jobs and a needed economic boost to the Flint area."
The first wave of employees is expected to arrive at Flint Assembly in the second quarter with more waves arriving until the plant starts the third shift in the third quarter. Initial openings will be filled by recalled laid-off Flint Assembly employees currently working at other facilities, primarily in Lansing. Remaining openings will be filled by laid-off employees in the area, including those from Orion, Willow Run and Warren in accordance with the UAW GM National Agreement. No new employees are expected to be hired.

VW to bring Bugatti to India

Volkswagen AG may introduce luxury car brand Bugatti in India in the middle of 2010. The Bugatti Veyron can touch a top speed of 400 km/hr and is expected to be priced between Rs 5 crore and Rs 12 crore in India. However, Mr Kurt Rippolz, the head of communication at VW India, said that it was up to every independent brand to decide on its India strategy, and refused to confirm Bugatti’s entry into the country.
According to media reports, the German car major is keen on bringing a number of its luxury car brands to India, including Porsche, Bentley and Lamborghini. Porsche and Bentley cars are currently imported to India by independent dealers.
However, it may not be economically feasible to bring these cars to the country as completely built units (CBUs). Cars imported to India as CBUs have to go through a process of homologation, which may not be possible in case of high-end luxury products because of the expenses involved and their low sales.
This may change as demand for luxury vehicles in India goes up, which seems likely in the light of  the country’s high growth rate and the positive experience of other luxury brands like BMW and Mercedes-Benz.

Mercedes to enter premium small car market in India

Original
Buoyed with robust demand, global auto giant Mercedes-Benz is looking at developing a small car for the Indian market. The proposed entry would be into the premium hatchback space over the next three to four years.

Sources say R&D is already underway on a multiple compact car platform that will spawn more than one premium small car offering in emerging markets like India by 2013-14.

An India specific small car built on that Euro 1 billion MFA platform will likely debut alongside A and B class cars from Mercedes Benz's existing portfolio.

Mercedes Benz India has already initiated discussions for these products with its vendors in India to ensure more localizat                Mercedes Benz said "As a policy, we do not comment on the company's future plans."

“Mercedes-Benz also plans to nearly double the headcount at its Bangalore centre from the present 600, by next year,” Mercedes Benz India's Chief Financial Officer and Management Board Member Uwe Jarosch had said.

As a part of its business strategy, the German carmaker also plans to set up brand centres with investment from its existing dealers, which would show-case around 20-odd models.

The first such centre is expected to be set up in Delhi by March this year, Jarosch said, adding Bangalore, Chennai and Mumbai centres would come up at a later stage.

The competition is also keenly examining the premium small car space with BMW likely to launch the Mini brand this year and Audi contemplating local assembly for its A1 city hatch, but are the volumes going to justify this bullishness?

For now Mercedes Benz is focusing on its bread and butter premium segments in the immediate future.

With BMW perched on top of the heap in India, Mercedes Benz hopes to wrestle the crown back from its traditional rival in India and expects over 30 per cent sales growth in 2011 to try and ensure that.

Tata Motors Launches the Venture in Maharashtra

Tata Motors has launched the Venture in Maharashtra. The MPV will be priced in the range of Rs. 4 lakh and Rs. 5 lakh, ex-showroom Kalyan (Thane district), BS III.  Earlier this month, Tata launched the Venture only in Rajasthan and now we see the company bringing the car into Maharashtra. This statewise launch does speak volumes about Tata Motors underlying stratergy to match demand with supply.

The less than 4 metre long Tata Venture can comfortably accommodate eight passengers in three front facing rows and has ample luggage space. A glasshouse effect with plug-in windows for second row passengers contributes to the distinctive exterior design while the contemporary interiors sport a two-tone beige and black theme. Comfort and convenience of both driver and passengers have been adequately addressed with dual HVAC, power steering, power windows, reverse parking aid, keyless entry with engine immobiliser and rear wipers.

A semi monocoque construction provides the required rigidity while the robust shell has energy absorbing crumple zones built in. A collapsible steering and side impact beams protect occupants in an exigency. The Tata Venture meets crash safety norms applicable in the domestic market.

The Tata Venture is powered by a 1.4 Litre turbo diesel engine, delivering 71 PS power, with best in class fuel efficiency among diesel MPVs in the country. The mileage as certified by ARAI is 15.42 kmpl. The Tata Venture will be available in 5, 7 and 8-seater options in 3 row front facing configuration and will be available in a range of 5 colors and 3 trim levels. The Tata Venture comes with a warranty of 2 years or 75,000 kms (whichever is earlier).

Maruti Suzuki’s Kizashi Luxury Sedan To Be Launched In February

Maruti Automobile’s New Small Car To Come Out By 2012

Maruti Suzuki’s latest car is set to come out by 2012.  Maruti Suzuki is set to finalise about the design in the next six months time.

Maruti Suzuki,

Skoda SK215

Expected in September 2011
Estimated price: Rs 8-10 lakhs
At the Skoda Fabia launch, Mr. Thomas Kuehl had made the announcement that Skoda has increased the local content on the Fabia to a total of 40% and now the company aims to make a completely localized car. The company has began work on it and they are designing a car specifically for the Indian car market.

For the time being, the code name for the new sedan is SK215. The SK215 will be based on the Fabia platform and will be competition to the Volkswagen Vento, its distinct cousin, the Honda City, the Fiat Linea and the Hyundai Verna. Our sources confirm that this car will be launched somewhere around September-October 2011.

We believe the SK215 will get the 1.6-litre petrol mill from the Volkswagen engine stable, and probably even the 1.6-litre TD CR engine recently introduced on the VW Vento. There have been rumours about a new Skoda Octavia being designed for the Indian car market. It isn’t the Octavia, it’s this all new sedan which is being designed for India. Watch out this space for more updates on the new Skoda sedan.

Tata Venture

Tata Venture
Tata Venture
Expected in January 2011
Estimated price: Rs 4.5-6.5 lakhs
Tata Motors had displayed the Venture at the Auto Expo this year in New Delhi. The Venture is a seven-seater van which will be powered by a 1.4-litre diesel engine which churns out 70bhp and it is based on the Super Ace platform.  This is the tried and tested engine that came strapped in the Tata Indica for many years.

Tata Motors sure seems to be on its way to capturing a niche space in this segment, as currently there are no players besides Maruti whose vehicles the Omni and the Eeco, both, come with petrol engines only. Tata’s diesel powered engine should definitely prove advantageous as this comes at a time when there’s hardly any competition for the giant automobile manufacturer.

CarWale Team spotted one of the test mules of the Tata Venture. The test mules indicate that Tata has reached the final stage of testing the car and we believe it should be made available in the market by November 2010. This will be the first seven-seater with a diesel engine in this price range and we expect it to be a hit in the market. The Tata Venture is most likely to be priced between Rs 4.5-6.5lakhs.
